  • Tourist Card. Available for 30 days with the possibility of extension to an additional 60 days. The Tourist Card is sold for $5.00 at the airlines and is also available upon arrival at the Tocumen International Airport.

Visas for U.S. Citizens Wishing to Retire in Panama

The Panamanian government has created attractive residency programs to attract prospective retirees to Panama.

  1. Panama Pensioned Tourist Program (Pensionado)
    Law No. 9 of June 24, 1987
    Residency program designed for retirees living on pension programs. This program grants alien the right to reside in Panama indefinitely. The retiree residence status requires that applicant demonstrates an income on pension of only US$500.00 per month and $100.00 for each dependent. This program covers applicant, spouse and children under the age of 18.

    Pensionado Visa Program
    Panamanian immigration laws authorize an alien to reside in Panama. One of the most attractive residency programs anywhere is Panama’s Pensionado program. So what are the qualification requirements?
    • You must apply in Panama
    • You must be at least 18 years old
    • Your application must be processed by a Panamanian attorney
    • Power of attorney
    • Registration Form. To obtain this form applicant must go in person to the Immigration Office
    • Letter from a private company or public entity stating his condition of pensioner and amount received per month You must have a verifiable minimum monthly income of $500 per month from a government program or private corporation. This could be Social Security or another government retirement fund, such as military, state retirement, police pension, etc., or retirement from a private corporation. For your spouse or minor children, your minimum income must be increased by $100 per month per dependent
    • Proof of the amount received duly authenticated by apostille seal or Panamanian Consulate
    • Health certificate issued by Panamanian Doctor
    • Certificate of good conduct issued by the authorities at the place of residence during the last two years duly authenticated by the Panamanian Consulate or by Apostille
    • Four photographs
    • Photocopy of passport ,all pages, including cover, notarized and authenticated by Panamanian Consulate
    • Sworn statement about personal background. This is done in Panama through a lawyer.
    • Original passport
    • You need to physically be in Panama when the visa is issued

      If married and applicant wants to include his family, should also provide:
      • Power of Attorney
      • Marriage certificate duly authenticated by apostille seal or Panamanian Consulate
      • Certificate of good conduct of wife and children over18 years old during the last two years duly authenticated.
      • Birth certificate of children duly authenticated by Panamanian Consulate.
      • Photocopy of passport.
      • 4 photographs.
      • Health certificate issued by a Panamanian doctor
      • Sworn statement about personal background done through a lawyer.
      • Responsibility Letter duly notarized and authenticated by Panamanian Consulate
      • All documents issued abroad must be duly authenticated by our consulate or stamped with Apostille BEFORE submitting paperwork to your attorney.


If you do not have a retirement, does that mean you are not eligible for a Pensionado visa?   Not at all.

  • A verified Certificate of Deposit in a Panamanian Bank that generates $750 per monthly income. The face value of the CD may vary due to interest rates offered by the Banco Nacional de Panamá.
  • The approximate face value of the CD would be about $200,000.
  • No additional amounts are required for dependents.



World Class retiree incentives benefit program

  • A Pensionado Visa entitles the visa holder to a 50% discount on the price of admission to recreational and entertainment activities such as movies, sporting events, theatre events, concerts, and the alike.
  • Discounts on other services:
    • 50% on hotels, motels, and pensions Monday through Thursday and 30% on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
    • 50% discount on real estate closing costs and commissions for personal and commercial loan transactions in your name
    • 30 % on inter-urban and City buses
    • 30% on trans-isthmian railroad
    • 30% on charges for small boats and ships
    • 25% on air domestic fares
    • 25% discount on your electrical bills if the monthly bill is less than $50
    • 25% discount on the fixed charge for personal telephone service. One telephone line only
    • 25% discount on monthly water bills. Maximum of $10 per month
    • 25% discount in restaurants (except for fondas — the small food servers not requiring a commercial license)
    • 20% discount on general, specialized, or surgical fees
    • 20% discount on technical and professional services
    • 15% discount in fast food restaurants
    • 15% discount on hospitalizations and medical clinics for those who cannot afford medical insurance
    • 15% discount on dental services
    • 15% discount on optometry services
    • 10% discount on pharmaceuticals prescribed by a Panamanian doctor
    • 15% discount on interest rates charged by lenders on personal and commercial loans in your name
    • Tax break on personal residential real estate as long as property is in pensionado visa holder’s name
    • Entitlement of a one-time exemption of duties on the importation of household goods up to $ 25,000
    • Total custom duty exemption every two years for the import or purchase of a motor vehicle for personal or family use.

There are financial requirements that may be substituted instead of a pension:
